Aunque el cine de terror japonés tiene sus antecedentes, no ha alcanzado una gran fama mundial hasta que Hideo Nakata dio inicio a una franquicia que dejaría una marca tanto en cine asiático como en el cine en general. Ringu originalmente nació como una novela y luego como una película para televisión estrenada en 1995 por la televisión japonesa, pero no fue hasta 1998 que llegaría esta versión que alcanzaría la fama más allá de su tierra natal. Para ser claro, Ringu no es exactamente una película de terror percée como muchos la han catalogado, más bien es un thriller sobrenatural o una historia de fantasmas que se enfoca bastante al suspenso y el misterio. Todo empieza con una muerte inexplicable relacionada con una nueva leyenda urbana sobre un video maldito y la pareja Reiko y Ryuji hacen una profunda investigación por tratar de resolver este misterio y romper la supuesta maldición a la que han sido expuestos. Es una película de misterio para ser más precisos con un ambiente tétrico. Así como el giallo utilizo elementos del género policial mezclados con el suspenso y el misterio para revolucionar el cine de terror italiano, Ringu narra una historia sobrenatural usando el misterio y el suspenso para recurrir a la sutileza y la psicología. Esto es algo que luego sería utilizado en distintas películas como Ju-On, Kairo o Uzumaki entre muchas otras. Eso hizo que Ringu fuera una película revolucionaria para el cine de terror japonés porque su método sirvió para actualizar este género y traernos otras películas que hicieron que el cine de terror del continente asiático ganara su público en el resto del mundo. Hay que reconocer que este método le funciona bastante bien al cine de terror japonés por como logra ser conmensurable con todo el misticismo que existe en el folklore japonés en relación con los yurei y el mundo de los espíritus. La película es puro ambiente tétrico y lúgubre, con un guion bastante regular. Lo que hizo que esta película se ganara un lugar en el cine de terror es por la escena de Sadako en el clímax final. No se puede negar que esa escena se ha vuelto icónica y más por la versión de Hollywood que se produjo tiempo después. Es gracias a aquella escena que Sadako termino robándose toda la película y diera inicio a un nuevo mito que sería explorado en futuras entregas de la franquicia. Ringu introdujo a Sadako como un nuevo icono del cine de terror y en tan solo poco tiempo logro ganarse ese título. Ringu es definitivamente una película que después de tantos años se ha ganado un gran valor cultural por haber cambiado el cine de terror asiático llevándolo más allá de sus fronteras y es una reliquia que vale la pena conocer por haber dado comienzo a otra franquicia que sigue teniendo a su público en la actualidad. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 8/10.

On the bright side, it's an easy watch thanks to the brief runtime, mystery premise, decent acting and some cool effects and setpieces. However, it's not scary at all and misses a lot of opportunities for deeper character work or subtext. Moreover, the dialogues just relay information, and the backstory isn't very original or exciting - and has the life-threatening capacity of a mediocre chain email. Also, I don't recall my grandma telling me that to get water out of a well you must jump in it.
